It snowed today in Santiago! Beautiful, right? Not when you're standing out in the cold during a big soccer (fútbol) game ...

I finally put my camera to good use. A fellow AFS student and I tagged along with our families and
just tried to follow the crowd. Even if that meant shouting in non-coherent Spanish at the top of our lungs and freezin' our asses off! (Photo credits by PintsizedPioneer) |
I was lucky enough to see the U. Católica vs. Sevilla FC game here in Chile. It's part of the Copa Euroamerica, which I know nothing about ... However, I do know that this match was pretty crowded, cold, and almost exclusively UC fans. It was awesome despite the fact that my team didn't even score. It's just a stellar experience: a fútbol match in South America. Fans shouting Spanish profanity, random local, Chilean cheers, and vendors selling almost everything make the event unforgettable.
The snow made it so much better/worse. No one was expecting it, which made playing conditions slippery, and the fans, more excitable. However, it did freeze up my hands. Apparently, Santiago hasn't had this bad of weather in a few years - we were due.

¡Gracias Panoramic iPhone Camera! It was crazy! (Photo credits by PintsizedPioneer) |
I really experienced Chile tonight - or at least Chilean pride. Too bad that U. Católica lost though (2-0 Sevilla FC)! It's amazing to me how enthusiastic everyone is during these games - even the little children are calling the opponent's goalie a "mother fucker" en español. ¡Qué adorable! More to come soon, if the weather doesn't prevent my traveling!
